Children choirs




Born in Barcelona, Elisenda Carrasco began her musical studies at the Superior Conservatory of Music in Barcelona, where she completed all superior levels in Composition and Instrumentation and Orchestra Conducting with J. Solé and S. Mas, respectively. She also gained a superior level qualification in Musical Education, specialising in Choral Singing. At the same time she continued her singing studies.


She has been teaching and conducting for over twenty five years. She has particularly developed and deepened her knowledge and technique with choirs for children and equal voices, gaining a lot of respect in the field. The conducting and instruction of youth choirs is one of the areas where Elisenda has most developed her knowledge of teaching and vocal skills. For this reason, she has been regularly invited to give courses and workshops all over the world (France, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Israel, India, Turkey, Venezuela, Colombia,..). 

For seventeen years, she has also been the artistic and musical director of the Cor infantil de l’Orfeó Català of the Palau de la Música Catalana.


She is the musical director of the “Òpera a secundària”, a opera project which is organised together with Gran Teatre del Liceu and the National Youth Orchestra of Catalonia. She also regularly collaborates with the Educational Service of Barcelona’s Auditori conducting and creating concerts for children and she's the artistic co-director of Cantània, a singing project where more than 45.000 children every year are involved.


She has been the musical director of the Cor infantil Sant Cugat since they began in 1991, and the female chamber choir Voxalba, where she has paid special attention to developing a 20-21th century repertoire. From 13'-14' she will be the artistic director and conductor of Lieder Càmera mixed Choir, the principal guest choir of Barcelona's Auditori.

From Baroque to Romanticism



Helmuth Rilling, born in 1933 in Stuttgart, is acclaimed worldwide as a conductor, pedagogue and Bach scholar. In 1954, he founded the internationally recognized Gächinger Kantorei choir, which joined forces with the Bach Collegium Stuttgart as its regular orchestral partner eleven years later. It was at this time that Professor Rilling began his intensive work with the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Rilling has both fervently advocated neglected choral music of the Romantic period and promoted contemporary music by regularly commissioning and performing pieces by key composers of our time. He has toured across Europe, the United States, Canada, Asia and South America, either as guest conductor or with his own ensembles. Maestro Rilling has collaborated with the world’s first-class orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic or Japanese NHK-Symphony Orchestra.

Over the last 30 years a special friendship has developed with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom Professor Rilling has performed in more than 100 concerts.

He is co-founder and Artistic Director of the Oregon Bach Festival, which since its inception in 1970 has become one of America’s most prestigious music festivals. In 1981, he established the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart, which initially focused on the promotion of J.S. Bach’s music and in the course of time grew into an exceptional institution that excels not only in its ensembles (Gaechinger Kantorei and Bach-Collegium Stuttgart) but devotes considerable resources to education and outreach through master classes, symposia and children’s programmes.

Working with young musicians from around the globe has always been a central focus of Rilling’s work. As part of a project of the Bach Academy Stuttgart, from 2001 -2009 he worked with the Festivalensemble Stuttgart, which led to the foundation of the Young Stuttgart Bach-Ensemble in 2011. Through his worldwide network of Bach Academies, Rilling offers workshops for students across the globe. Maestro Rilling recently conducted concerts in education projects in Japan, USA, Taiwan, Spain and Italy, with his own "Bach Ensemble Helmuth Rilling" he looks forward to perform Bach's major works in Germany and Russia.

Helmuth Rilling’s inexhaustible, creative activity is documented in hundreds of CD, radio and television productions. He was the first to record all of the cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach, and was the initiator of the International Bachakademie’s critically acclaimed project to record Bach’s complete works, released on 172 CDs during the Bach anniversary year in 2000. In the same year, Rilling won the coveted Grammy Award for his recording of Krzysztof Penderecki´s Credo, and was again nominated in 2001 for his recording of Wolfgang Rihm´s Deus Passus. Recent recordings include works by Haydn, Händel, and Gubaidulina (The Passion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ according to St. John, Echo Klassik Award in 2008), as well as a live recording of Britten’s War Requiem (Editor's Choice Award of the British Gramophone Magazine), the Messiah by Sven-David Sandström, which Rilling commissioned, and Verdi’s Requiem. His recording of Honegger’s Joan of Arc has been published in 2013.

Helmuth Rilling received the UNESCO International Music Prize in 1994, and the Theodor Heuss Taten der Versöhnung (Deeds of Reconciliation) prize the following year. In 2003, he became an Honorary Member of the American Academy of the Arts and Sciences, and in 2008 – on the occasion of his 75th birthday – he was awarded the Staufer Gold Medal, the highest award of the state of Baden-Württemberg.

In November 2011 Maestro Rilling was awarded the prestigious Herbert von Karajan Music prize in Baden-Baden (the previous year’s recipient had been Daniel Barenboim). Helmuth Rilling was honoured for his unique lifetime engagement with Johann Sebastian Bach as well as his teaching activities around the world. In October 2013 Prof. Rilling received the ECHO Klassik live achievement award by the German Phono Academy.

North american gospel, folk and african music



Rollo Dilworth is Professor of Choral Music Education and Chair of the Department of Music Education and Therapy at Temple University’s Boyer College of Music and Dance in Philadelphia, PA. He has served on the faculty since 2009. Prior to his position with Boyer College, he taught music education and was the director of choral activities for 13 years at North Park University in Chicago, where he prepared and conducted numerous extended and choral-orchestral works. Before teaching at the college level, Dilworth also taught choral and general music at the middle school level in his hometown of St. Louis, MO. Dilworth holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, OH), a Master of Education degree in Secondary Education and Music from the University of Missouri-St. Louis (St. Louis, MO) and a Doctor of Music degree in Conducting Performance from Northwestern University (Evanston, IL). ​

During his doctoral program at Northwestern University, Dilworth was accepted into the composition studios of Robert Harris, Pauline Oliveros, and Marta Ptaszynska. Throughout his career, he has written or arranged African American spirituals, gospel songs, Broadway selections, art songs, vocal exercises, and a musical—all of which are frequently performed by school, church, community, university and professional choirs in the United States and abroad. The majority of Dilworth’s choral scores are works commissioned by community and professional ensembles. In 2009, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and IN UNISON Chorus commissioned and premiered his choral-orchestral work entitled Freedom’s Plow, which is based on the text of a Langston Hughes poem bearing the same title.  In 2011, the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia commissioned a three-movement choral-orchestral work entitled Rain Sequence, featuring the writings of Langston Hughes and Paul Laurence Dunbar.


Over 150 of Dilworth’s choral compositions and arrangements have been published, and many are part of the Henry Leck Creating Artistry Choral Series with the Hal Leonard Corporation. He is also an established author and contributor for the Essential Elements for Choir and the Experiencing Choral Music textbook series. He has authored 3 books of choral warm up exercises intended for elementary and secondary choral ensembles, entitled Choir Builders: Fundamental Vocal Techniques for General and Classroom Use (2006); Choir Builders for Growing Voices (2009); and Choir Builders for Growing Voices 2 (2014).


Dilworth is currently Immediate Past Chair of the Board for Chorus America. He is an active life member of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). He also holds memberships with several other organizations, including the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the National Association of Negro Musicians (NANM) and the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP).

XXth century and contemporary


Simon Halsey is one of the world’s leading conductors of choral repertoire, regularly conducting prestigious orchestras and choirs worldwide. Halsey holds the position of Chief Conductor of the Berlin Radio Choir, frequently collaborating with such conductors as Sir Simon Rattle, Claudio Abbado and Marek Janowski. He has been Chorus Director of the CBSO Chorus for over 25 years, and works closely there with the orchestra’s Music Director Andris Nelsons. In 2012 he was announced as Choral Director of the London Symphony Orchestra and London Symphony Chorus, working closely with LSO Principal Conductor Valery Gergiev and leading choral strategy across the LSO’s performance and education programmes. Simon Halsey also holds the positions of Artistic Director of the Berlin Philharmonic’s Youth Choral Programme and Director of the BBC Proms Youth Choir. 

Recent projects for Halsey with the Berlin Radio Choir have included performances of Bizet’s Carmen at the Salzburg Easter Festival 2012 with the Berlin  Philharmonic  and  Sir  Simon  Rattle. He  furthermore  prepared  the choir  for  Tallis’  40-part  motet  Spem  in  alium   and  Antonio  Lotti’s Crucifixus,   in  a   programme  with  Mahler’s  Eighth  Symphony

which concluded Musikfest Berlin, as well as for Jonathan Harvey’s grand new work Weltethos. As Artistic Director of the Berlin Philharmonic Youth Choral Programme, Halsey will be responsible for leading a long-term education and performance project, bringing together a diverse range of young singers from all over Berlin to act as a large-scale youth chorus and partner to the Berlin Philharmonic for concerts at the Berlin Philharmonie and on tour. 

Upcoming projects in the 2012/13 season with the London Symphony Orchestra and London Symphony Chorus include Szymanowski Stabat Mater and “Song of the Night” with Valery Gergiev, Brahms Ein deutsches Requiem, also with Gergiev, and Mozart Requiem with Sir Colin Davis. Highlights of Simon Halsey’s work in Birmingham include Symphony Hall’s 21st anniversary concerts in June where he will be conducting the CBSO and its Chorus in Elgar’s final, deeply personal masterpiece The Music Makers. His work in Birmingham is complemented by a new role as Professor and Director of Choral Activities at the University of Birmingham. Simon Halsey held the position of Chief Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Choir from 1997-2008, and the position of Principal Conductor, Choral Programme of the Northern Sinfonia from 2004-2012. 

Halsey has worked on countless major recording projects, many of which have won major awards including several Gramophone Awards and Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik. In February 2011 Halsey received his third Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance for the recording of L’Amour de Loin by the Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, having previously won a Grammy in both 2008 and 2009 for the Berlin Radio Choir’s recordings of works by Brahms and Stravinsky respectively. 

In addition to the three Grammy-winning recordings, Halsey has made four recordings conducting the Berlin Radio Choir: Brahms Ein deutsches Requiem recorded on Coviello Classics; XL, a disc of choral music including works by Tallis, Bach, Kodály and Harvey recorded on Harmonia Mundi; Christian Jost’s Angst and Simple Gifts, featuring works by Britten, Copland, Barber and Tippett, both on the Coviello label. 

Other landmark recordings include Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Sir Simon Rattle, Dame Janet Baker and John Shirley-Quirk; Beethoven’s 9th Symphony on EMI, in a live recording with the CBSO Chorus, Vienna Philharmonic and Sir Simon Rattle and Mahler’s 2nd Symphony with CBSO, Sir Simon Rattle, Dame Janet Baker and Arleen Augér on EMI. Simon Halsey’s book and DVD Master Class Chorleitung was published by Schott Music in 2011. 

In January 2011, Simon Halsey was presented with the prestigious Bundesverdienstkreuz 1. Klasse, Germany’s Order of Merit by State Cultural Secretary André Schmitz in Berlin. This is in recognition of outstanding services to choral music in Germany.

Application criteria for active students in the master classes of the WSCM11:


1. A minimum experience of five (5) years as the principal conductor of musical performances.


2. Video, or URL links, with samples of rehearsals and performances are required. An edited video with excerpts will also be allowed.


3. List of repertoire performed that is related to the master class.


Active students will work with the master teacher in open sessions with a rehearsal choir and an audience, and in private classes with the master teacher and a pianist only. Observer students will be able to attend private classes as well.


There will be a maximum of six (6) places for active students, and ten (10) places for listener students, for every master class. Applicants for active students who are not selected will have priority a listeners.
