The venues of the SYMPOSIUM

The 11st World Symposium on Choral Music will be in the most representative venues of the musical life in Barcelona.

 

L'Auditori is a big musical complex where we can find different music halls, the high school of music of Catalonia (ESMUC) and the Museum of Music.

 

Designed by Rafael Moneo in 1999, it is located in a strategic place for its central location at the confluence of the three most largest city avenues (the Diagonal, the Gran Via and the Meridiana), and its proximity to the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, the 22@ district, the Agbar Tower, the Encants Nous market, Les Glòries shopping center and only 15 minutes walk from the Gothic Square and Sagrada Família.

The auditorium and classrooms of Ciutadella’s Campus, have optimal conditions for some activities of the Symposium.

 

The university campus near the Auditori of Barcelona –the central place of the Symposium-, has a restaurant and bar.

 

The proximity between the campus  and the Auditori allows to go on foot (10 minutes) following Avinguda Meridiana and Sardenya street, marked with gray on the map. The two buildings are connected by tram (T4) at Auditori-Teatre Nacional and stop at Wellington or Ciutadella-Vila Olímpica.

EL PALAU DE LA MÚSICA CATALANA

The building in art nouveau style, was constructed on 1905-1908, and is the house of l’Orfeó Català, one of the most important international choral institutions.

 

Located in the city center, it was designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Some of the most important artisans of the catalan art nouveau movement (modernisme) worked in its construction. In 1997, the building was declarated a Unesco World Heritage Site. It’s an allegory to the music and especially to the history of the catalan music tradition.

 

*The Palau de la Música has a Walcker organ built in 1908. The last restoration was made by the organ builder Gerhard Grenzing. It has 4 manuals, 1 pedalier and 63 stops.

BASÍLICA DE SANTA MARIA DEL PI

ESGLÉSIA DE SANT PERE DE LES PUEL·LES

The current church of Sant Pere de les Puel·les, was part of the old Benedictine female monastery, the oldest in Barcelona, founded in the Xth century. Of the old monastery only the church is conserved, reformed throughout the centuries due to the destructions caused by the wars and harassments that have suffered the city of Barcelona. In its interior, there are preserved columns with original Corinthian capitals that emphasize the Greek cross floor of the old Romanesque building. The façade, although in a very eclectic way, hides the portal and the sculpture of Saint Peter in the XVth century. It is also worth noting the preservation of a richly decorated return dating from the XVIth century.

SANTA MARIA DE GRÀCIA

The origin of this church comes from the Monastery of Santa Maria de Jesús de Gràcia, founded in the 15th century. After suffering
damages and different locations, the Bishop of Barcelona, Gregorio Modrego Casaus, blessed on 1944 the new and currently building located in Gràcia quarter, according to plans drawn by architect, Josep Goday.

AUDITORI DEL CONSERVATORI DEL LICEU

Located in the Raval neightborhood, it next to the Gothic Quarter and is located in the new building of High Conservatory of the Liceu. 

 

The equipment is in a privileged street that connects the Rambla with Paral·lel, a street with a lot of  theatres, bars and restaurants.

AUDITORI DEL CAIXAFÒRUM

Located next to the mountain of Montjuïc, known for the Magic Fountain’s show at night with music and colors, the MNAC (National Art Museum) and the 92’ Olympic Games.

 

Caixa Fòrum auditorium is located inside the old modernist (art nouveau catalan style) Casaramona textile factory, designed by Puig i Cadafalch between 1909 and 1912.

 

Currently it is one of the most active cultural centers in the city.

BASÍLICA DE LA SAGRADA FAMÍLIA

The basilica of the Sagrada Família is one of the world’s most renowned Modernist buildings.

 

Designed by Antoni Gaudí in 1883, still under construction and expects to be finished in the next 20 years. Gaudí conceived the temple from the traditions of gothic and byzantine churches uniting East and West churches tradition to communicate the Gospel message to everyone. All the elements of its architecture have a Christian symbolism expressed hierarchically.

 

* Organ projected by Blancafort. It has 26 stops in 2 manual keyboards of 56 notes and 1 pedal keyboard with 30 notes.

CAPELLA DE L'ESPERANÇA

Nestled in the building that was the Convent of Hope, it is a small church from the 8th century, with a single nave and side baroque chapels. Their ornamentation is totally restored. Outside there is a arch door very simple segmental topped by a shelf and a relief of fleshy leaves. Above, at the foot of a niche there’s an image of the Mare de Déu de l’Esperança and a large royal coat of arms. The façade was made following modern models of the 8th century, consisting of vases and floral garlands of Rococo spirit.

The Exhibition

The World Choral Expo will be in the Foyer of the Auditori.

 

During the WSCM11, the Foyer will become a meeting place between professionals, amateurs, institutions, editors and business of choral music. Exhibitors will have a chance to highlight their products and services in a place geared specifically to the international choral music market.
