Great Choral Works with Reduced Scoring

A high point of many choral concert programs consists in great masterworks with orchestra by Bach, Brahms, Bruckner, Dvořák, Haydn, Mozart, Puccini, Rossini, Schubert, or Verdi. But performing these works is a major undertaking, especially financially, which is not always possible. Smaller choirs don’t always have the opportunity to perform these attractive works which require a lot of instrumentalists. An alternative solution for this problem consists in arrangements of these works in reduced score so a performance can be achieved at minimal cost. As an example for these kindof arrangements, Brahms’ German Requiem and Schicksalslied as well as Rossini´s Stabat Mater will be presented in this session.  The presenter, Dr. Brady R. Allred will also share his ideas and practical hints for choir conductors undertaking this kind of project. Looking for new, contemporary, exciting repertoire for your choir? Come and discover compositions for mixed or equal voices by Ko Matsushita, DamijanMocnik and many more. These composers work with a lot of different choirs and experience new types of choir sound. A lot of these pieces are very accessible for amateur choirs. In contrast, some of them are very challenging, like arrangements by ClytusGottwald for choirs with as far as 16 voices.

CANTÀNIA- MILENA PI (Catalonia)

Project Cantània Schools sing at l’Auditori

Cantania is a participatory activity involving primary school children between 8 and 12 years old. Every year a new cantata is commissioned especially for the activity. To date, the commissions have gone to renowned Catalan composers and writers, to create works mindful of the specific characteristics of this activity. Cantania is an activity with different phases:

- Training sessions with the teaching staff.

- Work done by teachers with their class.

- Final concerts performed by the pupils in L’Auditori.

Work is done both in the organization and in the school from September to June. The aim is to organize an event for the pupils that, on account of its overall characteristics designed exclusively for them, its quality and their individual and collective involvement in it, becomes an unforgettable musical experience. In 2016-2017 Cantània is celebrating its 28th anniversary. The project took place for the first time in the 1989-1990 school year when the music teachers of Barcelona’s 9 municipal schools wanted to do a joint activity. In 1997 it was opened to all schools in the city. In 2002 it started to spread throughout Catalonia and, finally, in 2005 the project went worldwide. At the moment, Cantània is taking place in 10 cities of Catalonia (Barcelona, Olot, El Vendrell, Mataró, SantCugatdelVallès, Figueres, Manresa, Vic, Vilafranca del Penedès, Granollers), 6 cities of Spain (Cádiz, Sevilla, Zaragoza, Valladolid, Parla, Madrid), Guimaraes (Portugal) and 2 cities of Germany (Neustadt and Koblenz). 124 concerts, 50.000 children and 1.200 schools involved.
