With almost seventy years of history, the Coral Sant Jordi has remained true to its intial aspirations; to transmit the heritage of choral music to the highest technical and artisitic standard and to the widest possible audience. Looking ahead to the future, the choir looks forward to overcoming the challenges posed by choral singing today whilst striving to improve all aspects of the musical process.

Oriol Castanyer i Martí has been the conductor since September 2016.

CORAL SANT JORDI

The Coral Sant Jordi was founded in 1947 by a group of friends who met to sing with the encouragement of Oriol Martorell. From the beginning he took on the role of conductor and led the choir not only by means of his own personal way to understand and perform music but also with a social vision of the choir’s repertoire, interwoven with and committed to the historic moment of Catalunya.

Oriol Martorell’s contribution to the Coral Sant Jordi was essential. He was the soul and the stimulation of a choral approach which is fully alive today. In his own words “... we wanted to sing everything. From Gregorian chants or the “Llibre vermell de Montserrat” to jazz without forgetting the great composers of all time”.

With this eclectic spirit, combined with a commitment to Catalan music, the choir has had a long history of musical diffusion, having performed over 1,800 concerts in Catalonia, Spain and other European countries. Moreover, the choir has collaborated with prestigious conductors and composers such as Sergiu Celibidache, Eduard Toldrà,

CORAL SANT JORDI

La Coral Sant Jordi nasqué l’any 1947 d’un grup d’amics animats per Oriol Martorell, que des de l’inici n’assumí la direcció i encapçalà no tan sols una manera personal d’entendre i interpretar la música, sinó també una determinada projecció social del fet musical, vinculada i compromesa amb el moment històric del país.

Per a la Coral Sant Jordi, l’aportació d’Oriol Martorell ha estat essencial: va ser l’ànima i el dinamitzador d’una línia coral de plena vigència de la qual donen idea les seves paraules: “[...] ho hem volgut cantar tot. Des de melodies medievals gregorianes o del Llibre Vermell de Montserrat, fins a música de jazz, sense oblidar els grans músics de tots els temps.”

Amb aquest esperit eclèctic, combinat alhora amb un compromís amb la música catalana, la Coral posseeix una llarga trajectòria de difusió musical, que ja compta amb més de 1.800 concerts, interpretats a Catalunya, l’Estat espanyol i d’altres països europeus, i que l’ha dut a col·laborar amb directors i compositors del prestigi de Sergiu Celibidache, Eduard Toldrà, Duke Ellington, Antoni Ros Marbà, Sergiu Comissiona, Edmon Colomer, Laszlo Heltay, Laurence Foster i Lluís Llach, entre d’altres.

Amb prop de setanta anys d’història, la Coral Sant Jordi continua fidel a la seva orientació inicial de transmetre el patrimoni de la música coral amb el màxim rigor tècnic i artístic a un públic el més ampli possible. Projectada al futur des de l’experiència, manté viva la il·lusió per superar els reptes que planteja el panorama actual del cant coral, amb una exigència constant per millorar el procés musical en tots els aspectes.

Des de setembre de 2016, el seu director titular és Oriol Castanyer i Martí.
