ORFEÓ CATALÀ

One of the country's leading amateur choirs, it was founded in 1891 by Lluís Millet and Amadeu Vives to showcase choral works from Catalonia and all round the world, and to guarantee artistic excellence in its performances. Simon Halsey has been its resident director since September 2016, taking over from Josep Vila i Casañas. Josep Buforn is the choir's pianist. It is based at the Palau de la Música Catalana, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Orfeó has performed the most representative works in the choral repertoire, while also starring in the national premières of major works (Bach's Mass in B minor, and Haydn's The Seasons). It has been directed by the world's leading conductors (R. Strauss, C. Saint-Saëns, P. Casals, Z. Mehta, F. Brüggen, M. Rostropóvitx, Ch. Dutoit, L. Maazel, D. Barenboim, S. Rattle, G. Dudamel and others). In 2013 the choir made its debut at the Konzerthaus in Vienna, in 2014 it performed at the Sala Gulbenkian in Lisbon, in 2015 at the Royal Festival Hall in London and Cadogan Hall, and in 2016 toured Italy with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, conducted by D. Gatti. In May 2016 the Orfeó launched the celebrations of its 125th anniversary with a concert at the Palau de la Música Catalana. As for forthcoming international projects, the most notable of these are the choir's concerts in London in August, performing solo at Southwark Cathedral, and the ensemble's debut at the BBC Proms, one of the greatest classical music festivals staged in the British capital.

És un dels cors amateurs de referència del país, fundat el 1891 per Lluís Millet i Amadeu Vives per difondre el repertori coral català i universal i vetllar per l’excel·lència artística de les seves interpretacions. Des del setembre del 2016 Simon Halsey n’és el director titular, prenent el relleu a Josep Vila i Casañas. Josep Buforn és el pianista del cor. Té la seu al Palau de la Música Catalana, declarat Patrimoni Mundial per la UNESCO. L’Orfeó ha interpretat les obres més representatives del repertori coral, tot protagonitzant primeres audicions al nostre país d’obres importants (Missa en Si menor de Bach o Les estacions de Haydn). Ha estat dirigit per primeres batutes internacionals (R. Strauss, C. Saint-Saëns, P. Casals, Z. Mehta, F. Brüggen, M. Rostropóvitx, Ch. Dutoit, L. Maazel, D. Barenboim, S. Rattle i G. Dudamel, entre d’altres). El 2013 el cor va debutar a la Konzerthaus de Viena, el 2014 va actuar a la Sala Gulbenkian de Lisboa, el 2015 al Royal Festival Hall de Londres i al Cadogan Hall, i el 2016 va fer una gira per Itàlia amb la Mahler Chamber Orchestra, dirigits per D. Gatti. El mes de maig del 2016 l’Orfeó va iniciar les celebracions del seu 125è aniversari amb un concert al Palau de la Música Catalana. Quant a propers projectes internacionals, destaquen els concerts del Cor a Londres el proper mes d’agost amb una actuació en solitari a la Southwark Cathedral i el debut de la formació al Proms de la BBC, un dels més grans festivals de música clàssica, que se celebra a la capital anglesa.
